Fimiston CIL Tank Replacement

Client: Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd

CPC Engineering was engaged by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd to carry out the replacement the Carbon in Leach (CIL) train 1 tank 30TK02A (Existing CIL Tank) with a new CIL tank 30TK02A (New CIL Tank) at the KCGM’s Fimiston plant on site and associated work in accordance with their specifications. These works were critical to the KCGM’s Super Pit operations and as such CPC Engineering was required to liaise with the KCGM Superintendent at all times in order to minimise downtime. The works were based on CPC Engineering’s Method Statement in respect of the safe removal of the Existing CIL Tank and the installation of the New CIL Tank and associated structures.

 The Works on Site included:

a) The installation of scaffolding by CPC Engineering as required to access parts of the Works being performed at heights

b) Removal of Existing CIL Tank

c) The removal and relocation of existing services and components attached to the existing CIL Tank which included a davit crane, carbon screen, wiper structure, agitator, gearbox and motor, access platform, launders, feed pipe and other service to the existing CIL Tank including pipes and cabling

d) The installation of new columns to support racks on the northern and western sides of the tank

e) Abrasive blast and coating of the support structure and platforms to KCGM’s protective coating specification, abrasive blast and coating of the internals of the tank with Polibrid 705-E and abrasive blast and coating of externals of the tank with Interzone 954

The project presented unique challenges in that the CPC Engineering construction crew wore Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) monitors at all times during the deconstruction of the old tank and the construction of the new tank and thus ensuring that the works were carried out safely whilst KCGM carried out their daily production works according to KCGM regulations, policies and procedures. The construction crew administered safe work practices within confined environments and at elevated heights at all times throughout the project.
