Syrah Resources (Syrah) is a Melbourne based industrial minerals and technology company. Syrah began developing the Balalma Graphite project in 2015.
CPC Project Design delivered the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study for the Balama Graphite. The key outcomes of FEED included:
- Finalise the Balama flow sheet
- Finalise plant location and the overall plant and infrastructure layout
- Tender and award long lead equipment items
- Development of capital and operating costs to an accuracy of 10%
- Set up the project controlled budget and controls
CPC were then awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for detailed design of the Balama Project after executing the FEED phase in a timely manner. The scope of work included engineering design, procurement and expediting services required for the processing facility and supporting infrastructure. The detailed design phase was completed in 12 months.
Following the completion of the engineering phase a team from CPC joined the Syrah construction and commissioning teams.
Detailed design of the Balama project was undertaken in parallel with verification testwork, especially focused on wet and dry screening as well as the optimum final regrind circuit configuration. This resulted in the design being reworked on the run to ensure the design met both Syrah’s design expectations and schedule.
Processing of Graphite requires specialist knowledge of the material characteristics as it doesn’t behave, in the same way as other minerals being processed.
